Dr. Brenda Boudreau, Dr. Lauren Thompson Talk Roe vs. Wade at Brown Bag
Lebanon, IL (09/07/2022) — Dr. Brenda Boudreau, professor of English, and Dr. Lauren Thompson, associate professor of history, held a discussion regarding Roe vs. Wade and the Supreme Court at McKendree University's Brown Bag on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
The two professors' discussion covered where we as a country have been, where we are now that the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, and the ripple effect that the June 24th decision had on the legal, medical, and economic fields for many people. The discussion was free of personal opinions and presented only the evidence and facts, including the history and data on pregnancy and gynecology in the United States, the context of the ruling, the immediate impact the decision made on the nation, and issues that pregnant people living in certain states in the country now face.
Dr. Boudreau and Dr. Thompson discussed events that caught headlines this summer and emphasized that countless events like these are taking place throughout the United States as a result of the Supreme Court's decision. Following questions from many faculty, staff, and students alike, the professors ended by presenting campus resources that are available and by announcing a new program called Safe Zone, in which interested faculty and staff members promise to create a safe space for students to talk without judgement or an agenda about reproductive health questions. At this time, Safe Zone's official launch is planned for next spring.
