Alewine to Address Mathematical Association Annual Meeting
Lebanon, IL (02/25/2021) — Dr. J. Alan Alewine of McKendree University will be a plenary speaker at the 2021 meeting of the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America (ISMAA) on March 12 and 13. In the spirit of inclusivity, his presentation, titled "Something for Everyone," will appeal to students and instructors alike. It will include a teaching tidbit, an interesting proof of a well-known result, and musings on "being in the middle."
Alewine is a professor of mathematics who has been a full-time member of the McKendree faculty since 2002. For the past six years, he has also served as the associate provost for curriculum.
He received the ISMAA Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics Award in 2019. Given since 1991, it recognizes mathematics teachers who have been extraordinarily successful at the post-secondary level. Recipients are outstanding teachers who foster excitement about mathematics in their own students, and whose influence in teaching has extended well beyond their institution.
The Illinois Section of the MAA was founded in 1917, two years after the national Association was chartered. The Illinois Section is the tenth-oldest in the Association. The mission of the MAA is to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level. Since its inception, the Illinois Section has worked to help the MAA meet its mission.
The 2021 meeting, to be held entirely online this year, will be the Illinois Section's 100th annual meeting and will celebrate the organization's history.
