Alewine Participates in CIC Senior Leadership Academy
Lebanon, IL (11/19/2018) — Dr. J. Alan Alewine, associate dean for curriculum and professor of mathematics at McKendree University, is participating in the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI) Senior Leadership Academy for 2018-2019.
The CIC chose 45 mid-level administrators from independent colleges and universities nationwide in a highly competitive selection process. The yearlong program prepares higher education administrators for senior leadership positions. Participants acquire considerable knowledge, skills and experiences that are germane to the responsibilities and activities of a college or university vice president or officer.
"I am delighted to support Alan's participation in the CIC Senior Leadership Academy," said Dr. Christine Bahr, provost and dean of McKendree University. "He will learn about the various roles and responsibilities of senior administrators at other private institutions like McKendree, which will undoubtedly inform his own work here as Associate Dean for Curriculum."
Alewine has taught mathematics at McKendree University since 2002 and chaired the Division of Science and Mathematics from 2011 until 2014, when he was named the associate dean for curriculum. In this role, he chairs the Undergraduate and Graduate Councils, which oversee the entire university curriculum; convenes the General Education Review Committee; edits the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs; and works closely with faculty members to deliver a high quality educational experience to McKendree students.
He received his bachelor's degree B.S. from Furman University, and his master's and doctorate from Vanderbilt University. As a professor, he received three teaching awards: The United Methodist Church Exemplary Teaching Award in 2014, the Grandy Faculty Award in 2009, and the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008.
Alewine attended an opening seminar of the Senior Leadership Academy in St. Louis, Nov. 2-4, and will attend a closing seminar in Washington, D.C., June 20-22, 2019. Throughout the academic year, he will undertake a mentoring program, work with experts, participate in webinars and engage in a series of readings and case studies.
The Academy is co-sponsored by CIC, AALI, and Academic Search, Inc. For more information, visit cic.edu/SeniorLeadershipAcademy.
