Psychology Students, Professor of Psychology Publish Research about Stigma Toward Schizophrenia

Lebanon, IL (08/26/2022) — Dr. Guy Boysen, professor of psychology at McKendree University, and three psychology students and recent graduates published research regarding schizophrenia and the stigma the disorder still faces. Senior Peyton Osgood, Colby Price '22 and Aliyah Rollins '22 conducted collaborative research with Dr. Boysen as part of a research practicum course.

By surveying more than 1,000 people across four fields of study, the researchers discovered that stigma toward schizophrenia primarily occurs in relation to specific life goals related to physical safety. People fear physical danger from individuals with schizophrenia while simultaneously seeing them as no threat to their interpersonal, romantic or economic goals.

These findings were also shared as posters at the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference and McKendree's Academic Excellence Day in April 2022. To learn more, please view the journal article's abstract here.
