Professor of Psychology Featured on Educational Podcast

Lebanon, IL (03/07/2022) — Dr. Guy A. Boysen, a professor of psychology at McKendree University, was recently featured on the educational podcast Two Pint PLC: Personal & Professional Education Discussion. The interview revolved around Boysen's recent publication regarding Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a 2021 publication titled "Lessons (not) learned: The troubling similarities between learning styles and universal design for learning." His publication recently appeared in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology.

UDL is an exciting framework to improve accessibility of instruction; however, Boysen joined the podcast to discuss his critiques of the existing research to support UDL and how future work could improve confidence among scholars. UDL suggests that people learn in different ways and that there are multiple ways to engage learners and various forms of expression. While Boysen agrees that there more than likely is learner variability, UDL focuses solely on individual differences rather than the fact that there are some universal ways all people learn.

Two Pint PLC is a podcast that discusses education research on Saturdays over a pint of beer. The two hosts, Laurence Woodruff and Michael Ralph, developed a strong working relationship when they shared a department for six years teaching freshmen and collegiate biology. While they don't share every viewpoint or opinion, the safe and challenging discussions they had in their Professional Learning Community (PLC) were something they did not want to lose. While Ralph left to work in STEM teacher preparation and has since moved into a full-time research role at Gould Evans, their discussions and collaborations continue as they discuss educational topics and their professional experiences.
