Dr. Niki Owens, McKendree Teacher Candidates Attend Project LEAD Fall Forum

Lebanon, IL (11/15/2024) — On Friday, Nov. 8, Dr. Niki Owens, assistant professor of education at McKendree University, and a group of McKendree teacher candidates attended the 2024 Project LEAD Fall Forum at the Illinois State University Alumni Center in Normal, Ill. The students listened to keynote speaker Dr. Rachael Mahmood, 2024 Illinois Teacher of the Year, present From Your Story to Your Classroom: Shaping the Teacher Leader You Will Be. The teacher candidates learned how to be impactful teacher leaders and develop their leadership skills. They also were able to interact with other teacher leaders from across the state.

One statement that stuck out to Owens was when Mahmood said, "You are planting seeds in which you may never see the tree."

The 2024 Project LEAD Fall Forum was developed by the Center for Success, a non-profit organization. LEAD stands for Leaders in Education Advocating for Diversity. The Center for Success helps collaborating institutions get ahead by putting them at the cutting edge of school reform. Through its work, the organization helps to prepare and sustain talented and diverse teachers and leaders for PK-12 schools, especially for those serving low-income and marginalized students in Illinois.
