Dr. Frederking Talks China and Human Rights During Brown Bag Lunch Panel

Lebanon, IL (02/14/2022) — On Wednesday, Feb. 9, Dr. Brian Frederking gave an enlightening online presentation about human rights in China as part of McKendree's Brown Bag series. The entire campus was invited to view the presentation virtually and ask questions while enjoying lunch.

Dr. Frederking's presentation covered the rights people in China have and lack, the degradation of human rights, the political system, mass surveillance, and the discriminatory and genocidal policies against the Uighurs. The presentation also included two short videos about China's social credit system, which dictates the privileges citizens can and cannot enjoy due to their behavior and habits, and about the discriminatory policies against the Uighurs in Xinjiang.

Following the presentation, many in attendance asked questions and remarked how much of an eye-opening experience the discussion was. The presented material corresponded with the timing of the Winter Olympics, which are being held in China this year.

Brown Bag events are held each Wednesday throughout the semester and include an array of topics from a variety of speakers. A complete schedule of upcoming Brown Bag topics can be found here.
