Dr. Brian Frederking Receives 2024 McKendree University Grandy Faculty Award

Lebanon, IL (05/20/2024) — Dr. Brian Frederking, professor of political science, received McKendree University's 2024 William Norman Grandy Faculty Award, given by the Alumni Association. Dr. Frederking accepted the surprise honor at the morning undergraduate commencement ceremony held on Friday, May 10. The Grandy Award is given annually to recognize commitment to students and the ideals promoted by the university. The award is named for Dr. William Norman Grandy, who served from 1952 to 1968 as a professor of philosophy and religion, and as dean of students, academic dean and interim president.

Dr. Frederking earned his undergraduate degree from McKendree in 1990 and has been teaching at his alma mater since 1998. In addition to serving as a professor of political science, he is known for his commitment to teaching and his service and leadership on various committees, including the faculty senate. He frequently presents at McKendree's Brown Bag events and has also been the leader of Model UN activities on campus for more than 20 years.

Dr. Frederking teaches a variety of government and political science issues at McKendree. He is often very excited to teach his course material, with several of his students noting that, while they may not enjoy politics, Dr. Frederking makes the topics interesting and easy to learn. He is also the past recipient of the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award and the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award.

A native of Okawville, Ill., Dr. Frederking is a member of the American Political Science Association, the International Studies Association, the American Association of University Professors and the International Peace Studies Society. He enjoys teaching about world politics, international law, transnational security issues and global governance. Research-wise, he is passionate about the United Nations Council, collective security, international organizations, conflict resolution and foreign policy. He has also published several books, book chapters, journal articles and online articles. His latest book, titled Renegotiating the Liberal Order: Evidence from the UN Security Council, was published in 2023.
