McKendree Psychology Professor and Alum Publish New Study

Lebanon, IL (02/28/2024) — Dr. Guy A. Boysen, professor of psychology at McKendree University, and Peyton Osgood, a 2023 graduate and psychology alum of McKendree University, have recently published a new study in Teaching of Psychology. This article represents Boysen and Osgood's fifth journal publication together.

The article, which is titled "Test Format, Learning Confidence, and Perceptions of Teaching Effectiveness," is published in Teaching of Psychology, the official journal of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology.

This new study focuses on how test formats can affect students' ability to self-assess their learning. Testing students to help them learn and retain information is a standard, evidence-based practice in education. However, Boysen and Osgood have shown that students think they know more after taking a multiple-choice test compared to when they take an open-ended test. They hypothesize that multiple-choice tests seem to create a sense of overconfidence in learning because students only need to recognize the correct answers rather than produce them from memory.
